The collection consists of autograph manuscript draft fragments of Astoria (ca. 1836) and The Sketch Book (ca. 1820s). Also included are an autograph manuscript draft of a tribute to Irving and a tribute to Irving excised from the records of the New York and Massachusetts Historical Society; press cuttings of various Irving obituaries and obituaries of family members; 2 engraved, signed portraits; and a sample of Irving's signature.

Washington Irving (b. April 3, 1783, New York City-d. November 28, 1859, Sunnyside, Tarrytown, New York), American author, wrote his first popular work, A History of New York, under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker.
